The house

It was where half the town was born.

Langley Cottage was Coonabarabran's very first maternity hospital, built in 1935. It is heritage listed, and these days it is a bed and breakfast rather than a ward, but the bones of the place have not changed: high ceilings, wide hallways, brick fireplaces in the bedrooms and a verandah that runs the length of the front.

It is still a home, not a hotel. Gwyny lives in the rest of the house, so there is somebody here who knows the town and can tell you where to eat, which road is worth the detour and what the sky will be doing tonight.

Guests get their own rooms and their own keys, and share the kitchen, the lounge and the bathroom. It is the arrangement a good country guesthouse has always had, and the reason people write “felt right at home” in the reviews.

Original fireplaces survive in the bedrooms. They are not lit any more, but nobody had the heart to take them out.

The rooms

Big rooms, made up properly.

There are doubles, twins and a family room that takes two adults and two children. Every room has a bed you will actually sleep in, a television, towels put out for you and a key of your own. Short stays and long stays both welcome.

What you get, plainly.

The run of the kitchen

Cook what you like in the shared guest kitchen. It is properly stocked, not a token kettle and a toaster. If you would rather have a meal cooked for you, that can be arranged, but it needs to be booked ahead.

Breakfast already in the fridge

Bacon, eggs, bread, milk and a spread of condiments are waiting when you arrive, so you can eat when you want to rather than when a dining room says so.

Your own key

Every room gets its own key. Come and go as late or as early as the drive needs, without ringing a bell or waiting on anybody.

Set back from the highway

Cassilis Street is a quiet backstreet, which is the whole point after a long day on the Newell. It is still only a short stroll into the main street and the shops.

Park off the street

Private parking on site. Pull the car, the van or the trailer off the road and leave it there for the night.

Wifi and air conditioning

Free wifi throughout and air conditioning in the house, which matters in a Coonabarabran summer and again in a Coonabarabran July.

The shared rooms

The kitchen is yours to use. Guests keep remarking on how well stocked it is, and they are right: pots, pans, the lot. Breakfast supplies are already in the fridge, so you can eat at five in the morning if the drive demands it.

If you would rather not cook at all, a meal can be made for you. That one needs to be arranged in advance, so mention it when you book rather than on the night.

Ninety Cassilis Street.

Coonabarabran sits on the Newell Highway at the foot of the Warrumbungles, which makes it the natural place to break a long drive. Langley Cottage is a couple of streets off the main drag: far enough for quiet, close enough to walk in for dinner.
